Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Box Office Records

For seven years, one box office record looked untouchable. When Avengers: Endgame opened to $357 million in North America in April 2019, industry veterans assumed the theatrical business — battered since then by a pandemic, strikes, and the streaming wars — would never see numbers like that again. This weekend, a friendly neighborhood web-slinger proved them all wrong.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung into theaters and delivered a stunning $360 million domestic opening weekend, the biggest in box office history. Globally, the film pulled in roughly $932 million in its first three days — the second-largest worldwide launch ever recorded.

A Record Nobody Saw Coming

Even Sony Pictures film chairman Tom Rothman admitted he didn't believe a $350 million-plus domestic opening was possible in today's market. Speaking to TheWrap over the weekend, Rothman described sold-out screenings across entire cities — including every single theater in Manhattan on opening night.

The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), stars Tom Holland in his seventh MCU appearance as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo.

The records didn't stop at the weekend total. Brand New Day also set new all-time marks across the board:

  • Biggest domestic opening weekend ever: $360 million, topping Avengers: Endgame's $357 million
  • Biggest Thursday previews in history: $72 million, beating Endgame's $60 million
  • Biggest single day ever: $168 million on Friday
  • Sony's highest-grossing opening of any kind, across the studio's entire history
  • Record overall U.S. weekend: combined with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, theaters posted an all-time high of roughly $434 million

How Brand New Day Pulled It Off

No gimmicks — just Peter Parker

Unlike 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which leaned heavily on multiverse nostalgia and returning villains, Brand New Day was marketed on something simpler: the emotional aftermath of No Way Home's ending. Peter Parker erased himself from the memories of everyone he loved — including MJ and Ned — and audiences spent five years waiting to see whether he could win those relationships back.

Rothman called it "a movie about friendship — about human connection and the power of it." That framing clearly resonated. In PostTrak exit surveys, 58% of ticket buyers said they came because they're Spider-Man fans, while 41% cited the cast — with Holland and Zendaya named specifically as major draws.

Gen Z showed up in force

The single largest audience segment was the 18–24 demographic, making up 36% of the opening weekend crowd. These are the fans who were in elementary and middle school when Holland debuted in Captain America: Civil War in 2016 — a generation that has literally grown up alongside this version of Peter Parker.

Even China turned out

Chinese moviegoers have largely drifted away from Hollywood blockbusters in recent years, yet Brand New Day still opened to $121 million over five days there. That's a fraction of Endgame's $329 million China launch — the main reason Endgame keeps its $1.22 billion global opening record — but it's a remarkable result for an American superhero film in 2026.

What It Means for Hollywood

The timing could hardly be more significant. The superhero genre has been in a visible slump: Supergirl and The Marvels underperformed, and even well-reviewed entries like Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps settled for global totals between $500 million and $650 million. Brand New Day just posted numbers that dwarf them all in a single weekend.

Three takeaways stand out:

  • Theatrical is alive. Paired with The Odyssey, this was the biggest weekend in the history of American movie theaters — proof that audiences will still show up en masse for the right film.
  • Stars still matter. The conventional wisdom says IP sells tickets, not actors. Brand New Day suggests the truth is both: the world loves Spider-Man, but it especially loves this Spider-Man.
  • Momentum for Marvel. With Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, a re-energized fanbase arrives at exactly the right moment for the MCU — and for Sony, which has now grossed more than $10 billion across its live-action and animated Spider-Man films.

The Road Ahead

The next question is endurance. Endgame rode its record opening to $2.7 billion worldwide. Whether Brand New Day can approach that figure depends on word of mouth — and early signs are strong, with sellouts continuing into the week and IMAX screens splitting showtimes between Spidey and The Odyssey to meet demand.

One thing is already certain: on a weekend when Hollywood needed a hero, Spider-Man answered the call — and rewrote the record books doing it.
